I saw a bit of a documentary about TerraCycle on the television last week. This company is awesome. They go garbage diving for what they can use, and make it into something usable, and market it. Tote bags made from empty 'Caprisun' pouches. Perpetual totes made from discarded single use plastic bags. Bird feeders made from water bottles. And much more.
I was amazed at what they were doing. It is both 'green' and very inventive.
My first thought was, "What a great idea!"
My second thought was, "Why didn't I think of that?"

Here are a few just off the top of my head:
I've unraveled knitted sweaters and used the 'still good' yarn to make smaller items.
I've use foil pie plates as bird deterrents over vegetable beds.
I've planted old headboards in the yarden (yard + garden = yarden) to use as trellises for climbing plants.
I've cut the holey foot portions off old socks and used the ribbing as a dog grooming cloth.
I've cut the bottoms off old 2 liter pop bottles and used them as flower pots for seedlings. I used the top portion of the pop bottles over tender plants in the yarden when the Spring nights get a bit too chilly.
I've cut the sleeves and the necks from old tee shirts to make holdalls.
I've cut up old plastic grocery bags and knit them into clothes peg holders, braided them into rugs (years ago!), and made them into Christmas wreathes by tying them onto a wire coat hanger that had been bent into a circle.
I've furnished discarded golf clubs to my brother, who (with help from my father-in-law) made them into wind chimes (did the same with discarded metal piping, too).
I've made tomato cages out of old wire fencing. I've made fencing out of old wooden shelving.
I've made liquid soap by collecting the gooey bits of bar soap in a jar with water, and made washing detergent in much the same way.
I've turned old tea kettles, coffee pots, shoes, boots, handbags, and other sundry items into planters for bedding plants.
I've collected old newspapers and used them as ground 'cloth' under mulch to control weeds.
I've made curtains out of discarded blankets (fortunately, they were a 'matched pair' from two twin beds!).
I've made a 'safety deposit box' from an old dictionary by very carefully cutting out the center of the pages, so that from the outside it looked for all intents and purposes like a 'normal' book.
And that isn't counting making quilts from old jeans or shirts, cutting up old shirts into strips and braiding them or knitting them, or other 'normal' type textile endeavors!
Hope this helps... (hope it answered your query...).
I thought I sent you some more questions, now I'm not so sure. Besides, maybe it should take this reuse/recycle direction instead...
